JoJo’s Perch – A Valentine Day Story

This month, in honor of Saint Valentine I thought I would tell you a love story. A true, Love-At-First-Sight kind of love story … but with feathers. As many of my regular readers know I found my human while I was staying at a rescue. This is a story I got to witness there first hand (first wing?).

Romeo, a Lilac Crowned Amazon, (obviously not his real name – protecting the innocent and all that) found his human at the same rescue a few years before my time. His human (we’ll call her Friar Lawrence) had grown up with parrots and was looking for a feathered friend to adopt. They lived quite happily together for many years. And through these years they had their own routine, part of which was a monthly trip back to the rescue to get supplies from the shop and visit everyone there.

One day, while wandering the outdoor gardens where all the birds spent their days, Romeo heard a familiar call. It was another Lilac Crowned Amazon! Romeo called back, dancing and flapping his wings. He generally made himself a nuisance until Lawrence made her way to where the call came from. And yes! It was another Lilac Crowned Amazon named Juliet (again, not her real name, but every good love story demands a Romeo and a Juliet).

Juliet was just as excited to see another Lilac as Romeo was. They both started dancing and going through every call, whistle and word that they knew. Romeo made his human stand there for about an hour while they talked. He only allowed her to leave after she promised him that they would come back to see her again soon.

And they did. Soon their monthly visits became weekly visits. And on these visits Romeo would no longer let Lawrence visit the other birds, now he would fuss until she took him straight to Juliet. It wasn’t long until the employees at the rescue had a chair and a bird stand set out every Sunday so that the three of them could do their new routine – Romeo and Juliet on the stand and Lawrence reading a book in the sunny gardens every Sunday.

It was one of these Sundays that the rescue organizer made her move. She started the conversation lightly – “How’s the family?” and then moved on to “Boy, I’ve never seen Juliet or Romeo so happy.” Soon she had Lawrence thinking about if she could take care of two birds. Did she have enough room? Was there enough income to cover the extra food, toys, and vet bills? By the next week she had decided that she did.

Some adoption paperwork later and Romeo finally got to take home his Juliet. Together, all three of them made a new routine. Now once a month, Romeo and Juliet both come with Lawrence to wander the garden and visit everyone there.

About me…

I’m a 24 year old Senegal parrot. As with any creature as small as I am, I have a big attitude and know how to get what I want. I share my home with my human servant Megan and her Australian Shepherds, whom I torment to my heart’s content. Coming from a rescue, my history is a little bit of a mystery. My early life has caused me to be a picker, but it doesn’t matter too much – I know I’m gorgeous!

Have a question for me? You can contact me through my secretary, Megan, at meganvd@santarosavet.com or you can call one of my other staff members at your friendly Veterinary Hospital – the Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital.
