Wellness and Vaccinations

At Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital, we believe that when it comes to keeping our pets happy and healthy for as many years as possible, prevention is always the best medicine. When we are able to take a proactive approach to managing your pet’s health, we are better able to provide protection against many of the dangers that can affect companion animals. What’s more, through routine wellness care, we are able to identify potential medical concerns and address them right away – before they have a chance to develop into a serious and costly problem. Let us help extend and improve the quality of your loved one’s life through our comprehensive wellness care services.

What is “wellness care”?

Wellness care is the general term that refers to the ongoing upkeep of your pet’s good health. It involves annual or semi-annual physical exams during which we will also cover a number of other important topics, such as vaccinations, parasite control, nutrition and weight management and more. The goal of these routine visits is two-fold. First, we want to take preventative measures to protect your pet against a number of illnesses that are common among companion animals. When we can prevent disease, we can prolong your pet’s life and improve the quality of that life, too, which is always our goal.

The second component of wellness care is early detection. Although we’ll make every effort to prevent illness from occurring in your pet, sometimes it is out of our control. In those cases, we focus on identifying and diagnosing potential health problems as soon as they occur, so we can address them in the most timely and effective manner possible. Not only is early detection important for achieving a better prognosis for your pet, but it’s also a much more affordable approach to managing your loved one’s health.

During a wellness visit, the doctor will work on developing a complete health profile of your pet. We will examine your pet’s nose, eyes and ears, check your pet’s teeth and oral cavity, listen to your pet’s heart and lungs, carefully examine the skin and coat for any unusual lumps, swelling, or parasites, palpate the abdomen and muscles and perform an orthopedic evaluation of the bones, joints, and back. Wellness visits may also include certain routine diagnostic tests, as needed, to help us further evaluate your pet’s overall health status.

The wellness care at Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital is extremely thorough and we take as much time as necessary, answering your questions and asking questions of our own to help us understand your pet’s unique needs and risk factors. The more we get to know you both, the more precise and effective a health care plan we can develop. Your pet is unique and we will work closely with you to develop an individualized wellness program that is specific to his or her lifestyle and needs. The more we work together, the better the chances of your loved one enjoying a long, happy and healthy life.

Wellness Packages

Welcoming a new puppy or kitten to your family is such a joyful time, one that we hope to share with you. Our puppy and kitten wellness packages are not only designed to start your new pet off with a healthy foundation but are also used to establish lifelong relationships with our entire staff and your new family member.

For other dogs and cats in the household, we have a healthy pet plan to suit them. Our healthy pet plans offer unlimited examinations whenever they are needed. Routine vaccinations, parasite testing and treatments and much more are included. For puppies and kittens, neutering and spaying can be included, and for older pets, routine dental care can be part of the plan, all for a low monthly fee.

Vaccinations

Vaccines may seem mundane, scary, painful, routine, or just for the young and old. But vaccinations are the key to disease prevention and control. We have eliminated many of the diseases that were truly terrible with simple vaccinations. At Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital we tailor our vaccine protocols to each patient, individually. Not all pets need the same vaccines. Our goal is to keep your best friend healthy, not to sell a vaccine. If you have any questions as to why and when we give certain vaccines, feel free to ask us. We’re here to help you and your pets live long, happy lives.

Pet Wellness Santa Rosa

Allergies & Dermatology

Skin problems can be just as frustrating for your pet as they are for you. Conditions like allergies and infections can leave your animal friend feeling itchy, uncomfortable and unhappy. And many dermatological issues are only the part of the disease that you can see. In these cases, the skin problem is only the portion of the disease that is on the outside, and many other problems are on the inside, just unseen. The key to keeping your loved one as healthy on the outside and on the inside is accurately identifying and treating the underlying cause. At Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital, we can help you do just that! Our professional services are designed to help us get to the bottom of whatever is ailing your pet so we can treat it in the most effective and timely manner possible. If you suspect your pet may be dealing with a skin problem, don’t wait another moment. We can help them live a happier, more comfortable life.

At Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital, we can help you do just that! Our professional services are designed to help us get to the bottom of whatever is ailing your pet so we can treat it in the most effective and timely manner possible. Our staff has specialized education, training, and expertise in pet dermatological conditions, including those that are considered to be “severe” in nature.

The first step in the process is achieving a timely and accurate diagnosis. It’s critical that we understand precisely what we’re dealing with from the start so that we can work toward helping your pet feel better. Our hospital utilizes an in-house laboratory as well as numerous commercial and University laboratories, which allows us to get the answers we need. Some of the many skin disorders that we can provide assistance with include:

  • Allergies

  • Infections

  • Dermatitis

  • Parasites

  • Hormonal Imbalances

  • Tumors

  • Autoimmune Disorders

  • Chronic Ear Infections

  • Diseases of the Feet

  • Skin Cancers

We employ a number of different treatment methods, used either individually or in conjunction with one another, to help reduce and/or eliminate symptoms altogether. These treatment methods may include the use of topical creams, supplements, medications, therapy or surgery. For those conditions that cannot be cured, but only managed, we will work with you to develop a long-term treatment plan that will help improve your pet’s quality of life as much as possible.

If an allergy is to blame for your pet’s symptoms, we will conduct the appropriate testing to determine what type of allergy we’re dealing with as well as what factors may be triggering your pet’s reactions. From there, we will develop a treatment plan that will help get the allergy under control. This may involve the use of medications, or it may be as simple as making some changes to your pet’s home environment. We will customize our approach to help us achieve the best possible results.

Some of the signs that your pet may be experiencing a problem with his or her skin, ears or feet include:

  • Scratching more than usual

  • Rubbing against objects to relieve itch

  • Bad odor coming from the ears

  • Biting, licking or chewing at the affected area

  • Hair loss

  • Hot spots

  • Unusual bumps or lumps, on or below the skin

If you notice any of these things, your pet may be dealing with a skin problem. Don’t wait another moment. Let’s work together to help your loved one live a happier, more comfortable life.

Nutrition & Weight Management

Are you confident that what you’re feeding your pet is truly meeting his or her nutritional needs? What about weight? Are you sure that the number on the scale is where it should be? A balanced diet and proper weight control are fundamental to a healthy, happy pet. Yet, with so many choices and so little reliable information to go on, many pet parents find this aspect of their pet’s health care difficult to manage. The good news is you don’t have to go it alone! Our professional pet nutrition and weight management services can help take much of the guesswork out of keeping your pet healthy and fit. Let us develop the perfect diet and exercise plan that will bring out the very best in your animal friend!

Nutrition is Key…

The right food is like fuel to your pet’s body. To help keep them healthy and strong, you must find the right combination of ingredients and nutrients. That’s where our professionals can help! We’ll conduct a thorough evaluation of your pet’s health status, considering such important factors as his or her species, breed, age, current weight and any existing medical conditions. This will help us to identify your companion’s unique nutritional needs so we can develop a customized plan for meeting those needs most effectively.

In order to help protect and maintain your pet’s health, we carry the highest quality pet food products, including Hill’s Science Diet Prescription Diet (for dogs and cats) and Roudy Bush (for avian diets). Our recommended diets were all developed by veterinarians and are scientifically backed by nutritional research to improve your pet’s health. Each brand has a maintenance line that helps boost your pet’s overall health and a prescription line that was created to provide nutritional support for certain diseases and other health issues.

A Healthy Weight…

The next step in the process is figuring out what your pet’s ideal weight range should be. This is important because pets that weigh too much can be at a higher risk of developing serious, sometimes even life-threatening medical conditions. Likewise, companion animals that don’t weigh enough can become more susceptible to injury or illness. We’ll use our detailed nutritional analysis to help determine what the scale should read when your loved one steps on it, and also come up with a plan for achieving and maintaining that healthier weight over time.

Our work doesn’t end here, either. As the years go by, your pet’s health care needs will change, including those associated with diet and exercise. At certain intervals during your pet’s lifetime, we will revisit our approach and make any necessary modifications so that we can continue to achieve the results we’re after – a happy, healthy and fit animal.

You love your pet and want to see that little guy or gal enjoy a long, healthy life. You can achieve that goal by making a commitment to his or her nutrition and weight control needs, and we can help! Give us a call today to schedule a professional nutritional evaluation for your pet. You’ll both be glad you did!

Diagnostics

Your pet’s internal health can be much more complicated than you may realize. While a companion animal may appear to be perfectly healthy on the outside, he or she may be harboring a dangerous secret within. That’s why it’s so important that we take the appropriate measures to monitor and manage the ongoing health of our animal friends. The most effective way to do this is through veterinary diagnostics. These invaluable tools, such as blood testing, x-rays, ultrasound, and other modalities allow our experienced doctors to examine your pet from the inside, identifying, diagnosing and treating whatever may be ailing them quickly and effectively. Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital offers a wide array of routine and advanced diagnostic services.

Radiology

Radiology, or x-ray technology, provides our experienced doctors with the ability to examine the inner workings of your pet’s body, particularly the bones and joints. X-rays can be particularly helpful in diagnosing orthopedic conditions, such as fractures, hip dysplasia, and arthritis. Radiology can also be used to view the heart, lungs, and abdomen, allowing for the diagnosis of heart disease, bladder stones, tumors and more. With x-rays, we can quickly and accurately diagnose health problems so we can work on getting your pet back to good health again as soon as possible.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is one of the most important noninvasive diagnostic tools available to veterinarians today. It provides our doctors with real-time, highly detailed images of your pet’s organs. This state of the art technology uses sound waves to examine the specific functions of internal organs, such as the lungs and the heart. Here at Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital, we work hand in hand with ultrasound specialist Dr. Susan Caputo, who comes right to our clinic in order to prevent the added stress of travel for either you or your pet.

Laboratory

There are times when a physical exam is simply not enough to diagnose your pet’s health concerns. Our hospital is equipped with a growing number of state of the art, in-house laboratory tests, many of which provide results within minutes. Some of these include heartworm testing, blood chemistry analysis in mammals and avian species, urinalysis and fecal examinations, just to name a few. We also work closely with a myriad of different commercial and University laboratories all over the U.S. to meet the specific needs of your pet, ranging from simple blood screens to DNA testing, sexing and feather-picking panels.

If your pet seems to be feeling a bit under the weather and you’re concerned that an underlying illness or injury may be to blame, don’t wait another moment. Give us a call today to schedule a professional diagnostic evaluation.

Pet Dental Care Santa Rosa

Dentistry

Pet dental care is about much more than just preventing bad breath. A clean mouth can actually play a role in keeping your pet’s entire body healthy and disease-free. You can help your pet beat the odds by making a commitment to ongoing dental care, both professional and at-home. Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital offers both routine and advanced pet dentistry services. We’ll work with you to show you ways you can promote a clean, healthy mouth year-round. Is dental care really such a big deal?

In a word: YES! Without regular attention, your pet’s teeth and gums can become a haven for dangerous bacteria, which can start out as bad breath and spread to cause serious damage to your pet’s teeth and gums. As bacteria grow in your pet’s mouth, it can eventually spread through the bloodstream and cause a host of other medical problems throughout your pet’s entire body, including the heart, liver, and kidneys. It can even shorten your pet’s life.

The good news is, you can help your pet beat the odds by making a commitment to ongoing dental care, both professional and at-home.

Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital offers both routine and advanced pet dentistry services. Whether it’s an annual dental exam and cleaning or a complex procedure to treat and manage an existing oral health problem, we’re prepared to do whatever it takes to give your pet the smile he or she deserves!  We’ll work with you to show you ways you can promote a clean, healthy mouth year-round.

Signs of a potential dental problem may include:

  • Excessive drooling

  • Bad breath

  • Broken or missing teeth

  • Inflamed or bleeding gums

  • Changes in eating or chewing habits (dropping food, disinterest in chew toys)

  • Pawing at the mouth

  • Discomfort when touched near the mouth

If you notice any of these signs or symptoms, give us a call. Let’s work together to help your animal friend achieve optimum oral health for life!

Pet Surgery Santa Rosa

Surgery

Whether it’s a routine spay or neuter procedure, or something more complex, at Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital, we always operate with the safety and comfort of our patients as our top priority. We understand that while surgical care is something that we deal with every day, it’s not something you or your pet must face very often. We want you to know that we’re here to set your mind at ease. Our highly skilled doctors are experienced in performing a broad spectrum of pet surgical procedures, using the most up to date techniques and always adhering to the strictest standards of quality care. Rest assured that whatever your pet’s surgical needs, he or she will be in excellent hands with us!

Our highly skilled doctors are experienced in performing a broad spectrum of pet surgical procedures, using the most up to date techniques and always adhering to the strictest standards of quality care.

All of our surgical patients receive careful presurgical screening, which helps us to identify any potential risks so we can prepare for them ahead of time. This screening also helps us to develop a customized pain management plan that is tailored to your pet’s unique needs and risk factors. Our goal is to keep your pet as comfortable and pain-free as possible while also making sure he or she remains safe at all times while in our care.

The day of your pet’s surgery, we will be waiting to greet you both, assist you in completing any necessary paperwork and get your pet settled in. This is a great time to bring up any questions or concerns that may be weighing on your mind so that we can discuss them with you and help you feel confident leaving your loved one in our care.

During surgery – regardless of whether it’s a routine spay or neuter or a more advanced procedure – your pet will be continuously monitored by our experienced doctors and veterinary technicians in our AAHA certified Surgical Suite. From intravenous fluid support to thermoregulation, we will provide the optimal care for each patient. We work diligently to complete your pet’s procedure as efficiently and safely as is possible.

A common procedure that we perform at Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital is orthopedic surgery. We have had great success in treating orthopedic injuries in dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and pocket pets. There are also some orthopedic surgeries that we feel should be performed by a board-certified surgeon. When these cases arise, Sean Wells DVM, Diplomat, ACVS, of Nor Cal Veterinary Surgical will come to our hospital and give your pet the detailed, skilled surgical care that he has become known for performing.

When your pet’s surgery is complete, we will gently move them to our quiet, comfortable recovery area. There we will continue monitoring to ensure a safe and peaceful transition out of anesthesia and back to full awareness. Rest assured that your pet will awake to the familiar faces and gentle voices of our dedicated care team.

When you arrive to bring your pet home, we will spend some time going over our aftercare instructions, which may include a plan for managing your pet’s pain at home, during the recovery process. Should any questions or concerns arise during this time, we encourage you to give us a call. Remember – help is always just a phone call away!

If your loved one needs surgery, there’s no need to worry. The team at Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital is here to handle all of your companion’s surgical care needs.

Dog Behavioral Training Santa Rosa

Behavioral Counseling

All too often, pet owners find themselves dealing with unwanted behavior and feeling powerless to correct the situation. Behavioral issues can drive a wedge between you and your animal companion and make it difficult to embrace them as a part of the family. If you’re struggling with unwanted behavior – whether it’s a house training problem or something more serious, like aggression – you don’t have to figure it out on your own! Let the experienced team at Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital help you get the problem under control once and for all. Through basic obedience advice, proven behavior modification tips, and/or behavior-altering medications, we are confident that your pet will develop into the balanced, well-behaved family member he or she was meant to be.

The key to solving companion animal behavior problems is getting to the root cause. Often times a few smaller behavior problems can actually be symptoms of a much larger issue. For instance, a pet that eliminates in the house or barks incessantly whenever left alone may actually be doing these things due to separation anxiety. Only when we identify the real problem can we address it in a way that will actually get results.

It’s also important that we rule out any potential medical causes for your pet’s behavior. Many health conditions have symptoms that can easily be mistaken for bad behavior. For example, a cat that is suddenly urinating outside the litter box may not be acting out, but instead, may be experiencing a health problem that requires medical attention. We will start with a thorough health analysis before moving forward with any kind of behavior modification plan.

Some of the common behavior problems we see regularly at Santa Rosa Veterinary Hospital include:

  • House training problems

  • Excessive Barking

  • Destructive behavior

  • Biting

  • Jumping

  • Aggression

  • Fear/anxiety

When we’ve determined precisely what behavior issue we’re dealing with, we’ll work with you to develop a plan for overcoming the problem once and for all. Through basic obedience advice, proven behavior modification tips, and/or behavior-altering medications, we are confident that your pet will develop into the balanced, well-behaved family member he or she was meant to be.

If you’re struggling with unwanted pet behavior, you’re most certainly not alone. More importantly, we can help. Give us a call today to get started!
